Augmented & Immersed

Newsprint
Publication

While our own Earth increases to deteriorate, we continue to spend large amounts of time and money into creating a new digital one. This electronic world is not accessible and has many of the same problems that already exist. Augmented & Immersed questions if these are really the right steps at the right time for the future of humanity,

Project Duration: 5 weeks, Fall 2022

Tools Used: Indesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Dall-e, Chat-GTP

Goal: To create an informative newsprint publication using type and imagery to create dynamic layouts that follow a thoroughly researched topic.

Outcome: Augmented & Immersed explores the dark side of our journey into our increasingly digital future that is controlled by an elite few. Where human connection is lost and our personal data is exploited, I question whether this is right direction for humanity in today’s time.

Dimensions: 289mm x 380mm

Paper: 55gsm, Improved

Display Typeface

Norge Karlos is a contemporary serif typeface designed by Kulokale Studio. The serif feel and altered lettering contrasts the ideas presented by the grainy digital imagery of the publication.

Body Copy

Space Mono is a fixed width sans serif typeface designed by Colophon Foundry. The monospaced typeface resembles those used in code editors with its geometric form, but space mono has calligraphic influence in its strokes, giving it a more human look.

Cover image is an ACSII rendering of States of Mind, 1911 by Italian futurist painter, Umberto Boccioni. Futurist’s philosophy called for a regection of the past and a celebration of speed, machinery, violence, youth and industry.

Keeping the publication as analog as possible, Augmented & Immersed is only promoted through physical advertisement and word of mouth.

With More time:

With more time I would like to create a second volume of Augmented & Immersed. A lot has changed in the world of A.I. since creating this publication in Fall 2022. I also think successive volumes could cover a variety of topics involving consumer privacy.

By doing printed type tests, I learned the differences between type on screen and type on printed media. I also learned how to format text for larger sized publications and how to use the space effectively.
